South African & Mozambican Artists collaborate as Tangoma on Afro-House track ‘Stomp’ with proceeds going to the South African Education Project

South African producer Michelle Cade ( (Kindisch Records, Secret Music, The Plot), Mozambican artist Nelson Neves aka Nelson & Friends (Sheer Sound, Skyride Records) and fellow South African vocalist & producer Elle Holgate aka e11e (Get Physical, KMS Records) come together as Tangoma on track ‘Stomp’, an upbeat dose of uplifting afro-house with proceeds going to the South African Education & Environment Project.

Cade began collaborating with Neves and Holgate in 2015 where studio sessions resulted in ‘Stomp’. With a driving tribal rhythm, rising harmonies and chord hooks the track is a welcome dance-ready slice of sunshine, as the title suggests. Embedded within the track’s elevating sound is a profound message. The lyrics, sung in native Mozambican tongue Chisena and written in 2015, proved to be prophetic this year - speaking to a need to protect our planet and each other in the face of oncoming natural disasters, disease and wars:

“Tino mala na ndenda – we will finish with diseases
Tino mala na manzi – we will finish with the water
Tino mala na ghondu – we will finish with the wars”

While the message addresses a sober reality, the track’s call to action is a positive one - to empower ourselves amidst the pressures of the world via music. Dancing and coming together in tribal power is something 2020 has made us all appreciate more, and the message and intention of music following the essential global Black Lives Matter movement, more important than ever.

“We are delighted to be releasing ‘Stomp’ on Bandcamp on Friday July 3rd. The music platform has lead the way in supporting artists during the pandemic, and BLM. As three African-born musicians and we all have endless respect and a huge debt of gratitude to music of black origin and so it made sense that all money from sales of Stomp should be donated to organizations based in our home countries that need it most now, following the pandemic.” says Tangoma member Elle Holgate.

About Tangoma

Tangoma is plural for ‘Sangoma’ is Zulu word for a traditional healer or diviner, a role that one must be called to fulfill by one’s ancestors. The trio felt it an apt name for a group whose common devotion to Africa and interest in ancient ritual and social justice brought them together.

London-based Michelle Cade is known for her deep, dub-techno influences in her productions, DJ sets and compositions as well as her distinctly ethereal vocals and popular sound journeys as Mind Like Water where she fuses her musical influences with traditional sound healing. “Releasing on underground labels including Berlin-based Kindisch, Michelle has played gigs at Katerblau Berlin, Fabric, Anjuna Deep Explorations and Ministry of Sound. Fascinated by the science of sound as much as alternative cultures, traditional musical instruments and experimental rhythms, Michelle’s work explores how music has played a part in rituals, raising consciousness and inducing altered states of reality for thousands of years.’

Nelson Neves of Nelson & Friends was born in Beira, Mozambique from the Cena tribe, who’s music is inspired by African artists such as Youssour N’dour, Miriam Makeba, David Mazembe and Walter Olesse Waite. Having worked as a performing artist in singing & dancing company “Casa de Cultura” of Beira from the early 2000s he went on to found the successful Mozambique band Djaaka which toured in Europe & Africa and resulted in debut album “Mbole Mbole Nha Ngona”. Nelson supported Massukos for their tour in 2008 with the dancing and choreography at festivals such as Womad Festival, Africa Oye and Glastonbury. Now Londond-based he has worked in music and performing arts education as a tool for social change, running various workshops in schools, community centres, and detention houses in the UK since the mid 2000s.

Elle Holgate aka e11e cut her teeth as the lead singer of band African Queen in the 2010s, going on to move into the underground electronic music scene and DJing around London and hosting radio shows on Hoxton FM and Reform Radio. Her vocals have featured on tracks with producers spanning the worlds of House, Techno, Disco, Jazz and Drum n Bass, appearing on labels such as Get Physical, Ram Records and Mobilee. She has performed DJ and live sets at Ministry of Sound, Sounds From The Other City, Lightbox, Secret Garden Party and Obonjan and is one third of electronic trio S.E.T.
